property tax

The tax assessed on the property by the local government (e.g. city, village or township) for the various services provided to the property owner. Such services may include police and fire department services, garbage pick up and snow removal. Property taxes are usually paid semiannually, or monthly if the lender requires. The amount is based on local tax rates and assessed property value.
