Lanzarote is the island of 300 volcanoes, with breathtaking scenery. The name comes from the Genoese explorer Lancelotto Malocello who reclaimed the island from obscurity. Lanzarote's development of tourism has been dramatic over the last 30 years and despite the rise of visitors, the island has preserved its natural and cultural heritage. Lanzarote has opened a network of art, cultural and tourist centres paid for by the local government.

Dominating the centre of the island is the mountains crowned by Las Nieves peak and in the southern part are the sandy coastal flats like Maspalomas.
